Sword in the Stone

Perched upon its post, unmovable to all who had yet attempted to lift it from its place. It’s golden exterior shone brightly, teasingly to those who looked upon it.

Everyone gathered around the old table on which it had been placed, one after another each trying their hand and testing their strength. All efforts left the trying strained, embarrassed and baffled by its unwavering hold.

The eldest of them approached, unknowing of their struggles while he was away. Chuckling to himself as he looked over the puzzled faces, he stepped up for his turn at moving the unmovable. His face began to turn a bluish red and a vein along his temple beat like a drum as he tried with all his might. Alas, he stepped away defeated. Once again the others took their turns stepping to the unaffected fixture, approaching it from different angles and with untried techniques. Although nowhere closer to moving the object, their hunger grew with each attempt.

Eventually they grew exhausted from their efforts and the whole bunch sat back, at a loss of ideas. The youngest and littlest of them all hung back at the doorway, she had not taken a turn but had watched in awe at their struggles, while absently tugging on a strand of hair. Seeing everyone’s fatigue, the little girl announced that she would try. The others howled, relieving them from their stress for a moment and told her not to bother. The young girl protested, demanding equal opportunity and stepped in front of the challenge that had defeated all before.

The girl took a deep breath, closed her eyes and placed her small hands around the test. With a quick twist and a loud pop the golden fixture was freed from its place. The young girls mouth hung open as she turned to show the others what she now held in her hands. The others gasped and cheered with excitement.

The eldest stepped forward and took the post and golden fixture from the youngest and passed the post to the eldest woman. “We loosened it for you.” He said to the girl with a grin. And the fiery contents were poured into a pan beside the pot of pasta.
