Negative thinking is something that no one is immune to; we all experience it at one time or another, in one form or another. Popular culture would have us believe that all negative thinking is just that, negative. But, like certain kinds of anxiety, negative thinking is often intertwined with intuition, if not a symptom of a problem that needs to be worked out. Here are 5 ways to help stop the negative thinking and gain control of your thoughts, without losing the lessons that they hold.
Resist pushing it out of your mind just because it is bad:
I know that sounds ironic. Pushing it out of your mind sounds like a no-brainer way to rid your mind of the negativity. However, sometimes when we are thinking negatively, it is not that we are negative people but rather that there is a message trying to reach out to us, if we do not resist pushing it away, it will surely come up again.
Assess the Root of the thought:
Once we have resisted our urge to bury it deep down. Think about what made you have the thought in the first place. Often the root of the thought exposes us to things we may have not known, or admitted before. Facing these things is always the first step to making a positive change. This also gives you the power to decide whether more attention is needed, or if the worry is unfounded.
Purposeful Thinking
Often while doing daily tasks that we are familiar with, our minds are left to idle. Stop that and put your brain to work! Give your brain a positive task to do. Instead of worrying about the problem, assign your brain 5 ways to solve that problem. This will help direct your thoughts when they start to go a stray.
Controlled Positive Thinking
Although also great way to distract from negative thinking, taking your mind to a positive place purposefully, with the intention to build your self up can be very rewarding. When you take time to purposefully think positively, your brain will remember it in the future and it will become habit.
Meditate
I don’t mean to imply that you must master opening your third eye, although it is a possible side effect. I mean clear your mind. Meditation offers lots of techniques on how to master clearing your mind completely through breathing and visualization techniques. Although it takes some practice, clearing your mind for even just a few moments throughout the day will allow your mind a chance to rest and restore, leaving your mind more relaxed and open for ideas
