The Blue Moon of 2015

The July full moon has had many names for many reasons. Farmers throughout history have referred it to as the Buck Moon because it is the time of year when bucks get their antlers or the hay moon or the thunder moon. Some have referred to as the Honey or mead moon too. This Friday is the second full moon in the month of July. Making this moon even more special. It is rare for there to be two full moons in one month and so it has a special name and is referred to as the blue moon.

Despite our beliefs, I think we all feel a connection to the moon’s phases, even if it is us merely questioning if there was a full moon because things had become a little...strange. “Must’ve been a full moon.” Some people get fearful or frightful of the kinds of things that happen on nights of a full moon as it conjures up the eeriness we look for in horror movies and dark tales. While others just love it and are drawn to look to it on the nights that it is full.

I have always felt a connection to the moon, even as a child I really loved it, but now in my (later) twenties I’m starting to understand and connect deeper to my own personal relationship and patterns with it. I think it is nice and necessary, in the busy world we live in, to find time to find enjoyment in the phenomenon that nature has to offer us. And, to celebrate it because we search for enjoyment and to connect in so many ways these day, but once in a blue moon, the sky gives us something to enjoy and connect to all on it’s own and all we have to do is look up.

Looking forward to a Martini in the Moonlight this Friday!
