You Can Feel It In The Air

Where I am, we’ve just started to see the first dustings of white. In the last week we have gone from what almost felt like a spring after fall, to winter. The official start isn’t for another few weeks still, but you can feel it all around. It’s the same every year in Canada and yet every year without a doubt there is that distinct surprise that comes with the chill in the air and suddenly, we face the end of another year. There is the bustle of the holidays for most, that sweeps us through until the New Year, but in the moments in between the end and the beginning there is a quiet time of reflection and contemplation that only the start to winter offers.

Some of my favorite memories of winter are of my Nana and Papa coming down to our house Christmas morning. We’d wake up early and they’d come down from up the street to open gifts. Soon after, the house would fill up with the smell of breakfast. Then, we’d pack up and travel to my Aunt and Uncle’s; another home rich with the scent of deliciousness. Winter makes me miss holding my Nana’s hand.

Another of my favorites is from just two years ago when we first moved into our townhouse. The day we moved we got hit with the most snow I’d seen in years and it didn’t stop coming down until the spring that year. I remember looking out into our new backyard and breathing in the freezing air, one night. There was no wind, just one of those snowfalls where it’s just a steady fall of big, fluffy, white flakes. I remember thinking how much the snow made me believe in magic.

As this winter approaches, I look forward to warm drinks, late nights wrapping and baking, making a perfect snowball, that crunch beneath my feet, outdoor fires, Christmas movies, too much food, and all of the things I can anticipate for the New Year.

This Christmas, should you celebrate or not, is also the date of this Winter’s first full moon. As we enter this time of year, I will be putting forth purposeful positive energy and I hope you all will too.
