The ball was dropping; all over the world people were celebrating with loved ones. Oliver, though, was alone in his mom’s basement. Well, not completely alone. His older sister, Rebecca, had fallen asleep long before the countdown had even begun. Oliver stayed there though; glad she was there even if asleep. The past year had been such a blur. But he couldn’t think about that. He watched the TV, New Year in New York City.

Nothing like my night, He thought. But as the countdown ticked something clicked for Oliver. This is just a whole New Year beginning. The last year had been so awful. But he couldn’t think about that. He watched from 8 to 7. “Listen to me. “ I can’t face another year. I’ve fucked everything up. But he couldn’t think about that. 6 to 7. The holidays are almost over and I’ll have to go back and face it all. Don’t think about it. You’re stupid and no one will forgive you for this past year. Push it away. 5 to 4. “Listen to me.” I’ve fucked it all up. There’s nothing I can do to change it. 4 to 3

I’m hearing voices in my head. I think I’ve lost it. 2 to 1. “Listen to me.”

Oliver began to panic, truly believing that he had lost his mind. He didn’t know what to do. He looked over at sleeping Rebecca. By her side he shook her. “Bec! Wake up. There’s something wrong!” Rebecca sat up panicked now herself. “What is it?”

“I’m hearing voices in my head.” He half whispered. Rebecca smiled and laid her head back down. “That’s just your conscience. You’re supposed to hear a voice in your head. You have control of it.” She giggled and closed her eyes.

Oliver went back to his chair. Relieved. Wait what?
