Another Lesson

Not all of my education

Came from within a book

Some things I have learned

Have come from within a look

Not everything I have learned

Has come from days in school

Lots of things I’ve learned

have come from breaking rules

The most important things I know

Did not come from being taught

It has come from learning all about

What’s me and what is not

We know not everything that glitters

Is in fact gold,

Just because is can be bought

Doesn’t mean it should be sold

Just because it can be thought

Doesn’t mean it’s truth it holds

Just because it can be sought

Doesn’t make it a graceful goal

Most things in this life

Can’t be measured by a dollar

Not every call unanswered

Is from an unknown caller

Hindsight shows us all

where it could’ve went wrong

Where we have been saved

And why it took so long

Empathy is just a word

In the dictionary

Until you feel someone else’s pain

The word is not that scary

Until you’ve lost it all

You don’t know you’re lost at all

Until you’ve actually fallen

You don’t believe that you can fall

Until you’ve gotten back up

And had a look around

That’s where you’ll learn the lesson

There, down on the ground

When anger is actually sadness

And your sadness is lost hope

When a smile is not sincere

When you’ve given up the dope

When you’ve come through on the other side

And see there’s still side there

When you’ve done what no one thought you could

When you’ve shed yourself bare

In the holes of our lives

That’s where the lessons wait

Some call it the struggle

Others call it fate

All I know is that

The most valuable tools we’ve got

Come to us in moments

And we untie the knots
