A Moment Worth Capturing

We all posed for the picture. It was Aleksandra’s idea; like most things.

We all agreed though, that it was a moment worth capturing.

Aleksandra, with her hat to the side and her cigarette dangling in the same fashion, sat down in the chair so we would all gather around her in the photograph.

After all, it was her idea, all of it.

Juta was quick, like always, to get behind Aleksandra’s ideas, and climbed in behind her in the chair; posing with the cigarette close to her mouth.

She was the muscle; she had been the one to do it after all.

Little Mai, always at Juta’s side, crouched against the side of the chair’s arm to get a light off of my sister, Lemme.

Lemme sat on the other side of Juta, both of them after all had helped to plan it.

Behind Lemme, Iris stood, her hat tipped back as it always was and her cigarette, mid-puff, as it always was.

Irma’s arms wrapped around Iris and I, as she leaned over to fit in the picture. She and Iris were the ones to clean it all up.

I stood with my other sister, Leida, tucked deep in my arm and I try to force a smile. Leida and I had just been initiated into the group.

It was Aleksandra’s idea; like most things.
